main street logoThe Texas Main Street Program, part of the Texas Historical Commission's Community Heritage Development Division, helps Texas cities revitalize their historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts by utilizing preservation and economic development strategies.

The program began in 1981 and is affiliated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Texas Main Street Program is among the most successful downtown revitalization programs in the nation, and has assisted more than 140 Texas cities through the program.

Winnsboro became a Texas Main Street city in 2003, and was selected as a National Main Street Community in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012.  Since its designation, Winnsboro’s Main Street Program has been a major factor in the development and preservation of our downtown with over $11 million dollars reinvested in our downtown through public and private funding.

The Winnsboro Main Street District includes the commercial and industrial buildings bordered on the west by Mill St, east by Chestnut, north by Locust and south by Carnegie. Many of these buildings are constructed of locally produced brick and are 100 or more years old.

The Winnsboro Main Street Program provides a variety of incentives to building owners such as paint, awning, sign grants and free advice on architectural design and restoration. Main Street is the heart and soul of a community. Winnsboro’s historic downtown area is fast becoming a “Destination City” featuring fine restaurants, antiques, specialty shops, notable musicians, artists, art galleries and is one of the first cities designated by the State of Texas as A Cultural Arts District.

The Main Street Board continually focuses on the preservation and restoration of downtown by using the Texas Historical Commission Main Street’s 4 Point Approach of Design, Organization, Promotion and Economic Restructuring.

Kennedy Smith, longest-serving director of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Main Street Center, explains, “The Main Street program creates a vibrant, multi-use, pedestrian-friendly environment, in the  traditional commercial district, thereby increasing economic vitality and saving historic buildings that make up the character and heritage of a community.”

The community of Winnsboro is proud of their achievements in their program’s development, and maintaining their commitment to downtown revitalization.
